general
What is Operation HomePort?
Operation HomePort (OHP) is another example of the Navy Child and Youth Program’s dedication to professional development. OHP provides opportunities to gain valuable hands-on experience working with children and youth participating in Navy CYP Child Development Centers (CDC), School Age Care (SAC), and Teen programs at select naval installations. OHP interns assist in and lead the planning of developmentally appropriate activities, facilitate and participate in planned activities, supervise and account for the whereabouts of children and youth, and support and facilitate positive, respectful relationships between children, youth, parents, and CYP professionals. Assignments are approximately 120-days long and opportunities may exist for the position to extend for a longer period of time or to complete an additional assignment in a new, exciting location. Logistics
Is this a paid internship?
Yes, this is a paid internship program. Depending on your specific background (education, experience, certifications, etc.) and the individual needs of each Navy CYP installation, hourly wages range from $16.27 - $17.62 an hour.

What would my work schedule look like?
Intern assignments will be approximately 120-days at domestic and potential international locations (some locations may vary slightly from the 120-day model). Normal duty schedules represent a 40-hour workweek conducted between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Schedules may fluctuate based on individual host installation requirements but will remain at 40 hours (overtime is not authorized in this program). The US government recognizes the following legal holidays established by Federal Statute:
Sick time will be coordinated with your on-site supervisor, as needed.
Potential exists for subsequent and/or consecutive 120-day assignments at the same installation or other installations throughout the United States or overseas locations. Interns must attend a mandatory virtual Newcomer’s Orientation prior to beginning their first job assignment. Additional on-site training may be required based on installation requirements. If required, training time will be considered part of the 40-hour workweek.
Who pays for my food and lodging during the program?
Food expenses can be covered in two ways. Meals that fall within eligible travel periods (from your home to your assignment and back to your home) will fall within NC State University per diem regulations. Though you will initially pay for those meals, they will be reimbursed according to NC State University per diem rates when you file your expense report. During your assignment, you will be provided access to on-base dining facilities as permitted by law, installation requirements, country agreements, or decree of the Commanding Officer or designee.
All your housing requirements will be handled by NC State University and/or the Navy CYP program. NC State University will coordinate and pay for any required hotel lodging during your travel to/from your assignment location. The Navy CYP program will arrange for your lodging during your assignment. Based on availability, lodging may be in on-base Navy Lodge facilities or in pre-approved off-base lodging (hotels).
What happens if I need medical care during my assignment?
If you become ill during your assignment, you will continue to utilize whatever personal health care plan you had prior to the internship. Though we certainly hope you won't require any medical attention during the program, we know things happen. If you find yourself in a situation requiring medical assistance, your Navy CYP on-site supervisor will first assist you in finding and obtaining medical assistance. They will then contact the OHP staff to share all necessary details to ensure you have received all care required.
